It has been the goal of Democrats since Franklin D. Roosevelt to create a universal health care system guaranteeing health care to all people. Every other major industrialized nation has done so. It is time for America to join them and fulfill the legacy of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson and other great Democrats.

The Affordable Care Act was a critically important step towards the goal of universal health care. Thanks to the ACA, more than 23 million Americans have gained health insurance. Millions of low-income Americans have coverage through expanded eligibility for Medicaid that now exists in 31 states. Young adults can stay on their parents’ health plans until they’re 26. All Americans can benefit from increased protections against lifetime coverage limits and exclusion from coverage because of pre-existing conditions.

A we embark on a new path forward, we must build upon the success of the ACA to achieve the goal of universal health care. Twenty-nine million Americans today still do not have health insurance and millions more are underinsured and cannot afford the high copayments and deductibles charged by private health insurance companies that put profits before people.

Thanks to ACA, Florida leads the nation in Florida for healthcare plans. But nearly 120,000 people in the 17th district live without health insurance. Our future depends on our ability to help one another. We must see to it that those without health insurance get the insurance they need. Allen will also fight against efforts to end Medicare and he will work to ensure cost burdens on Medicare recipients is brought to a screeching halt.

The American health care system costs way too much and insurance companies are running the show. Allen believes that health care should be a universal right, not a privilege only for those who can afford it. We must increase healthcare access to give Americas the peace of mind that comes with knowing they have access to quality health care. Americans should not have to make decisions between putting food on the table and going to the doctor or filling a prescription.

Allen stands with progressive for a Medicare for All system that will guarantee coverage for every American, lower health care costs, allow a choice between private and public Medicare plans and force insurance companies to adhere to the rules that we set. This is not socialism this is the government doing its part to serve it’s citizens like our founding fathers intended.
