“I mourn the deaths of the four students and another seven wounded today in yet another mass shooting, this time at Oxford High School in Oxford Township in suburban Detroit. I grieve for the community and the families of those who have been killed and wounded.”

“A 15-year-old sophomore was arrested by authorities for the shooting. We don’t know the motive yet for the shooting, but we cannot allow such tragedies to continue in our civil society. Before this shooting, there have been 138 incidents of gunfire on school grounds, resulting in 28 deaths and 80 injuries, according to Everytown for Gun Safety.”

“Over the last two decades, our society has become ravaged by mass shootings and it’s never more tragic than at our schools — from Columbine High School to Sandy Hook Elementary School to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, here in Florida. Everytown estimates that 3 million children in the United States are exposed to shootings every year. Such exposure causes long-lasting, devastating effects on them such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

“We need our elected officials to do something to curb the proliferation of guns and the violence in our schools and society. A majority of Americans favor some kind of gun control measures, but the Republican Party — including Sen. Marco Rubio — has ignored such pleas for too long. Their resistance amounts to criminal neglect.”

“As senator, I support practical gun-safety measures that do not impinge on people’s Second Amendment rights. There is not an easy solution but together we can make progress, but doing nothing is not an answer, it’s just a death sentence for more Americans.”
